The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) was formed in 2001 and is a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). IGBC is closely working with government agencies to popularize the green building movement in India.
The IGBC has developed a rating program (IGBC Green Homes®) in India for the residential real estate sector based on established environmental and energy principles. This rating system is voluntary and is developed on the basis of resources & technology that are currently available. The stated objectives of IGBC Green Homes® are as follows:

IGBC Green New Buildings Rating System® addresses green features under the following seven categories:
The level of green building certification shall be based on the total credit points earned by the project. There are some mandatory requirements that have to be met by every green building.
A green building minimizes the use of water, increases energy efficiency, and makes maximum use of recyclable materials. The wastage in construction is low & negligible.
The building is largely self-sufficient through the use of renewable energy sources. Solar water heaters and light panels are used for heating & lighting purposes. Rainwater is conserved by installing an efficient rainwater harvesting system in the building complex. The building is designed to provide sufficient air & sunlight in every home. The consequent reduction in artificial lighting, heating, and air-conditioning can significantly reduce the building’s overall energy consumption.
Green buildings make the maximum use of locally sourced, recyclable materials. The disposal of construction waste is not a serious concern as it can be reused effectively. A proper waste management system takes care of both solid & wet waste generated within the complex.
Another hallmark feature of green buildings is the provision of ample green cover & lung space for people to relax and bond with nature. The housing project also encourages the residents to grow their own food through the kitchen & rooftop gardens and community farming initiatives.
The green building movement in India has received a massive fillip over the past few years. Beginning with just 20,000 square feet of green building area in 2003, over 8,600 green buildings with 9.75 billion square feet are now registered with the IGBC.
